In the footsteps of the Witch Finder General Matthew Hopkins!

This tour will excite you, explore this dark chapter of Essex history told sympathetically and compassionately, stories that will fascinate and terrify equally. On a guided walking tour, unique to Manningtree.

The Short Tour:

Arrive outside the pub between 10:45am, you will meet your tour guide Jane. The tour will start at 11am and will last approx an hour and half as you explore the local history from over 400 years ago, where Matthew Hopkins, self appointed Witch Finder General started his brutal crusades.

You will wind up back at The Red Lion, where this story first began, where you can stay and enjoy refreshments and finish your tour.

The Long Tour:

You will need good walking shoes for this one! Starting again at the pub at 1:45pm, where you will meet your tour guide Jane, you will visit locations associated with The Witch Finder, this tour will take you through streets, fields, and woodlands to discovery Manningtree’s dark history. The tour will promptly start at 2pm and last approximately 2 hours, winding up back at The Red Lion where you’re welcome to stay and enjoy a refreshment from the Bar.

You will need appropriate clothing and footwear for both tours, appropriate footwear is a must!

Tours cost £20 per person. Spaces on tours are limited so please ensure you book early to avoid disappointment.
